If you don’t want to discuss your bingeing with your primary care doctor, contact a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in eating disorders. Catching these things early can help prevent complications. Your doctor can also test you for other problems that may be related to your bingeing, like depression or anxiety, and weight-related issues like high blood pressure. Binge eating is the most common eating disorder. Chances are your doctor sees other patients who have it, too. You might feel embarrassed, but you shouldn’t. If you have a good relationship with your doctor, ask for a referral to a health care professional who specializes in eating disorders. That’s a higher success rate than for other eating disorders. Research shows that 70% of people who are treated for the disorder stop bingeing. Therapy can make you feel better about yourself and help you learn ways to stop overeating.
